Teaching letter recognition and phonics on a pre-school level is a completely different experience to teaching the same material in grade 1, even though the age difference is not necessarily that large. Whilst in grade 1, the use of PowerPoint presentations, worksheets, reading and writing is highly effective, in kindergarten, these resources become tedious. Instead, I recommend using an abundance of songs and tactile games for introducing children to letters and reading.
Every kindergarten to pre-school English Language class should own a couple of sets of plastic bloc letters. These are great for teaching with and lend themselves to a variety of letter recognition games and word-making exercises and races. Check out the Lesson plans, Ideas and Activites section.
Importance of phonics - if you do embark on teaching letters on a pre-school level, be wary of teaching the ABC (letter names). It is recommended that children are first introduced to phonics, i.e. the sounds that letters make, and gradually at a later stage, children learn the names of the letters as well. In this way, children gain a strong basis for sounding and blending, and become faster readers better equipped for first grade.

Jolly Phonics - Jolly Phonics is a colourful bundle of phonics posters and songs to introduce children to phonics and gradually start reading. However, as a programme designed for native children, the teaching techniques have to be adapted to suit second language learners. YouTube - The best way to get pre-schoolers to start recognising letters and remembering their phonetic sounds is through songs. You can find an abundance of short letter songs, and beginner's sounding videos on YouTube. I highly recommend these channels for phonics songs:

A powerpoint presentation to practise blending and reading CVC words (consonant - vowel - consonant). Includes a colourful list of around 16 easy CVC words on each slides. Last two slides also practise blending and words with digraphs (ai, ee, ie, oa, ue... )

Missing letter phonics practise PPT
A powerpoint presentation to practise letter recognition, phonics and reading. A compilation of easy reading words with one letter missing. Students are called upon to identify the picutre (if they can) and the missing letter in the word. As an extension, children can write the complete word on the board.
Easy phonics and blending PPT games
These are a set of easy and colourful powerpoints each containing one syllable or CVC word and are used together with dice or points cards, that are used to award team points. Points cards can be simple numbers on construction paper or can be more elaborate with pictures and various points-switching, all-points-erasing twists. Children are divided into teams and asked to raise their hand and blend the letters / read the word on the powerpoint. The student that does so then selects a card (cards are facing down). Their team is then awarded the given amount of points.
You can download the example points cards bellow, or make your own. The most succesful games include cards with points from 2 up, a special 10 points card, 10 points for all golden card, bomb card (erase one teams points), tornado card (erase everyone's points), switch card (switch points with another team), steal card (steal one team's points). Minus cards are not very popular with children but can be used too.
Point Cards PDF
Point cards to be used together with powerpoint games. For durability stick back to colourful construction paper and laminate. To elimanate cheating, print front and back side and stick together.

A powerpoint game to practise blending, reading CVC words, 4-letter words and words with digraphs. Starts with CVC words and gradually increases in difficulty.
